Nancy Forsythe Harrington, M.Ed., LICSW
An Integrated Approach to Healing
From neuroscience and attachment research to body-based approaches, Nancy’s goal is to bring the most current advances in psychotherapy to her work with couples and individuals. She brings an openness, respectful curiosity and warmth to her interactions with her clients.
Experience and Knowledge
Nancy began her career as an early childhood teacher, traveling and working in the rural south. She taught for 10 years before recognizing that she could more effectively support healthy childhood development by coaching and teaching parents. She received an M.Ed in Counseling and did just that! While raising her own family she taught Childbirth Classes, parenting workshops, and pursued an MSW in clinical social work at Smith College. She now brings 30 years of experience as a therapist to CIH.
She has worked as a clinician in both community mental health and private practice, as well as at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Psychiatry Department. Until recently she held a faculty position at Geisel Medical School, supervising medical residents’ learning of dynamic psychotherapy skills. She started and oversaw an internship program while at Dartmouth for Smith College Social Work students.
Currently, she works primarily with adults, many of whom have experienced trauma, struggles with addictions, or depression and anxiety. She works with them to find more effective ways to meet life's challenges.
She has a keen interest in the explosion of knowledge happening in the world of the body, emotions, and brain. Besides traditional dynamic psychotherapy approaches, she is trained in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy and Internal Family Systems. These modalities bring her practice an experiential focus, connecting neurophysiology with psychology for transformative and enduring results. She is trained in EMDR and has extensive advanced training in working with trauma. She advocates and teaches mindfulness and meditation practices.
